A weighing scale with a happy person at one side and a frustrated person on the other

In our written evidence to the Scottish Government Poverty and Inequality Commission and the Equalities and Human Rights Committee, we reported on survey research that investigated the impact of measures to combat coronavirus on people with hearing loss.

The survey explored themes relating to communication, including facial coverings, 2-metre distancing and the shift to more phone/video calls – all of which are direct responses to coronavirus.

Quantitative and qualitative data emerging suggests that these changes introduce or exacerbate communication challenges experienced by people with hearing loss, placing a greater burden and strain on them when it comes to staying in touch with family and friends, using important services and support, and navigating workplace communication.

As well as sharing the survey findings, we offer a viewpoint on what needs to change or improve in order to remedy the unequal impact being experienced.
