Checking and improving hearing access

Ideas for Ears has supported Volunteer Scotland to assess levels of hearing access and to take steps to create a more comfortable and inclusive environment for staff, service users and other stakeholders.

Activity has included:

  • staff survey, analysis and report
  • audit of audio equipment, including hearing loops and public address systems
  • user assessment of meeting spaces (including acoustic comfort, lighting, layout and audio equipment)
  • testing of acoustic treatments

As a result of the work done, Volunteer Scotland has taken taken steps to improve its facilities by upgrading audio equipment in a large training room and installing sound-absorbent panels into two other meeting rooms.

The assessment activity has helped staff to become more aware and knowledgeable of hearing and deafness issues, and more confident and able to meet needs of colleagues, service users and other stakeholders.
